Spring semester fitness classes, wellness packages offered at activity center

Setting and sticking to weight loss or fitness goals can be challenging, but experts and personal trainers at the New Mexico State University James B. Delamater Activity Center and Wellness Center are prepared to help keep you on task this semester.

“One of the best things you can do is to set reasonable and measurable goals,” said Shon Meyer, assistant director of fitness and wellness at the NMSU Activity Center. “Set the amount of weight you want to loose but also a specific time to reach that goal in. It will help keep you motivated.”

Meyer says finding an exercise buddy or group often is another way to keep motivation high and boost morale. The Activity Center offers classes and packages – at minimal cost and no-cost – to accommodate the needs of faculty, staff and students. Some of the free exercise classes began Jan. 20 and some will start on Feb. 2 and are available each semester. A staff or faculty member simply needs to present a valid I.D. at the front desk to receive a wrist band and admission to the Activity Center regardless if they want to take a class or make use of another area of the center.

A wellness center also housed in the Activity Center, is open noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday. Here, for a cost, patrons can get a full orientation to an exercise circuit similar to Curves gym. During this process, a trainer explains how to use each of the strength-training machines and between each set, the person performs an aerobics stepping session, Meyer said. “Going through the whole circuit once takes about 15 minutes, but most people can fit in three times around during their lunch break. And after, they know they’ve gotten a work out,” he said. A $40 fee will be assessed for faculty and staff for the first semester using the circuit training program, and there is a $20 renewal fee each semester thereafter. A free orientation service is offered for other equipment in the activity center in the cardio and weight rooms.

A new website www.aggiefit.org, launching this semester, will offer a place for individuals to create a free account to log their amount of activity hours, a fitness planner, links to nutrition tips or health articles and more.
