Between and after classes and on weekends, head for the James B. Delamater Activity Center, home to the Recreational Sports program at New Mexico State University. Recreational Sports includes a wide variety of programs aimed at satisfying many types of fitness and exercise needs.

For those focused on the best health and fitness services possible, aerobics classes and personal trainers are available in the Student Wellness Center. Other students take advantage of the weight room for sessions of training and lifting. There are courts for basketball, indoor soccer and badminton, an indoor running track, racquetball courts, and martial arts and dance studios. Other students practice climbing techniques at the climbing wall, or head for the natatorium to swim and dive in the indoor or outdoor pools.

Intramural team sports are very popular, and include sports such as softball, wrestling, volleyball and flag football, outdoor soccer and basketball. Other team activities are available, and though not affiliated with the recreational sports programs, they are among the sanctioned student organizations at NMSU. These organizations include clubs for aficionados of the martial arts, bicycle racing, rugby, polo, cricket, climbing, rodeo and many others.

The Outdoor Adventure Program is a very popular place for students to begin their exploration of Las Cruces and surrounding area. With a list of possible activities that includes rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, caving, rafting, kayaking, alpine skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, canoeing, the program has an exciting line-up of courses, weekend outings and clinics. The majority of their programs are designed for those with little or no experience in a given activity, although programs are also offered for those with established skills.

The Outdoor Adventure Program also operates a bike and board shop where do-it-yourselfers can work on their bikes, snowboards and skis with advice from the expert staffers. Another great resource is the outdoor equipment rental shop, which makes high-quality outdoor gear available for rent at affordable prices.
