For his work in mentoring science and engineering students, Ricardo B. Jacquez received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM).

For more than two decades, civil engineering professor Ricardo B. Jacquez has mentored and served as a role model for hundreds of students throughout New Mexico.

During his tenure as the director of the New Mexico Alliance for Minority Participation (NMAMP), science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degree awards have increased from 253 in 1992-1993 to 580 in 2003-2004. During the same period, the percentage of baccalaureate degrees awarded to underrepresented students has increased from 24 percent to 42 percent.

For all this and more, Jacquez and nine other individuals and one organization were honored at the White House in November 2007. The awardees received a $10,000 grant to continue and advance their mentoring work.

PAESMEM is a program supported and administered by the National Science Foundation.
