ASBMB Certification

Biochemistry majors who have completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree may receive American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology certification.

The biochemistry program at NMSU offers a hands-on, research-focused education with small class sizes, close faculty mentorship and extensive lab experience across chemistry, biology, and physics. Students gain strong scientific, analytical and communication skills while preparing for careers in research, healthcare or graduate study, with opportunities for American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology certification and undergraduate research.

Students must complete all university degree requirements, which include: General Education requirements, Viewing a Wider World requirements, and elective credits to total at least 120 credits with 48 credits in courses numbered 300 or above. There is no second language requirement for the degree.

  • CHEM 430 - Physical Chemistry: Thermodynamics, Kinetics, Quantum Chemistry, and Spectroscopy

  • CHEM 456 - Inorganic Structure and Bonding
  • CHEM 472 - Advanced Integrated Instrumental Analysis and Protein Biochemistry Laboratory
