The Department of Physics at New Mexico State University (NMSU) offers a robust undergraduate program designed to prepare students for diverse careers in science, technology, and engineering. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Physics receive a comprehensive education encompassing classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics. The program emphasizes the development of critical skills such as problem-solving, mathematical modeling, computer programming, and laboratory techniques. Graduates of the physics program at NMSU are equipped with strong analytical and quantitative skills, a deep understanding of physical principles, and hands-on experience in experimental and computational methods. Students who enjoy the physics degree tend to be curious, analytical thinkers who are passionate about understanding how the universe works, enjoy solving complex problems, and are motivated by challenges in science, math and technology. 

The physics department offers two different bachelor degree programs in physics, both of which provide a solid foundation in the four main disciplines of physics: classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism and thermodynamics.

The Bachelor of Art in Physics allows for more flexibility in electives and requires a minor in another department. There is also a one year second language requirement. 

The Bachelor of Arts in Physics consists of 120 credits. To earn this degree, you need to complete all Department of Physics core courses, and all university degree requirements, which include General Education requirements, Viewing a Wider World requirements, and elective credits with 48 credits in courses numbered 300 or above.

A Bachelor of Science degree in physics at NMSU prepares a student well for graduate study in physics, astrophysics, or engineering or for a variety of careers in research and teaching. Students who plan to seek employment at the BS level are advised to take the concentration area curricula as part of their electives in addition to the general and departmental requirements. 

The Bachelor of Science in Physics is accredited by Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission's General Criteria with no applicable program criteria. 

This degree program consists of 120 credits. To earn this degree, you need to complete all Department of Physics core courses, and all university degree requirements, which include General Education requirements, Viewing a Wider World requirements, and elective credits with 48 credits in courses numbered 300 or above.

The Bachelor of Science in Physics includes a one year second language requirement.
