At New Mexico State University, the Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education (S ED) program, offered through the School of Teacher Preparation, Administration and Leadership (TPAL), is dedicated to preparing compassionate and effective educators who are ready to inspire and lead in diverse 6-12 grade classrooms. Our program emphasizes culturally responsive teaching, inclusive practices and a strong foundation in core subjects, ensuring that graduates are equipped to meet the needs of all students.

The Experience

Engage in coursework covering psychology, fine arts, multicultural education, human development and instructional technologies.​ With a strong foundation in secondary education and a commitment to social justice, graduates are equipped to lead and innovate in various educational settings. Gain hands-on teaching experience and learn to create inclusive, culturally responsive classrooms that empower every child to succeed.

Students in the Bachelor of Sciecnes in Education program participate in over 900 hours of field-based experiences, including a 15-week student teaching placement, to apply learning in real classroom settings and develop skills to work effectively with children from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, preparing you to teach in the borderlands and beyond. 

General education and professional education are similar for all degree programs in the College of Health, Education, and Social Transformation. However, coursework for teaching fields/concentrations and endorsements will differ.

The B.S. Language Arts in Education is considered a broad teaching field and includes course work that covers more breadth to broaden the teachers’ knowledge of the range of content in these disciplines.

The Bachelor of Science in Education consists of 120 credits depending on the teaching field. To earn this degree, you need to earn a “C- or better in all education, TEP prerequisite, endorsement, teaching field courses and complete all University degree requirements, which include General Education requirements, General Education requirements, Viewing a Wider World requirements, and elective credits with 48 credits in courses numbered 300 or above. Note: For certification in the State of New Mexico the Bilingual/TESL endorsements require 6 credits of a language other than English.

The B.S. Math Education degree embeds course work taken by mathematics majors in addition to course work that is meant to broaden the teachers’ knowledge of the range of content in these disciplines.

Admission Requirements for Teacher Education Programs

All students wishing to complete a degree in Secondary Education must apply to the Teacher Education Program.  A 2.75 minimum GPA is required for admission to the Teacher Education Program and a 2.75 minimum GPA must be maintained for graduation.

Accreditation

New Mexico State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, an institutional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Specialized accreditation from other accrediting agencies is also granted for some programs. NMSU’s accreditation ensures that your education meets high-quality standards and that your credits are transferable.
