From Farm to Future Science: NMSU’s Animal Science B.S. Blends Animal Management with Cutting-Edge Genetics, Nutrition & Physiology
The Animal Science program at NMSU offers an industry-relevant curriculum across two concentrations, exploring the biology, management, and care of livestock and horses, as well as foundational concepts in companion animals. Students gain hands-on experience at the NMSU Animal Science Farm, home to diverse teaching herds and flocks, and benefit from access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the new Meat Science Laboratory and Student Learning and Outreach Center. Our expert faculty engage students in innovative research and education spanning animal health, reproduction, genetics, and nutrition. With a curriculum that blends scientific discovery, experiential learning, and real-world application, NMSU Animal Science graduates are prepared for careers across animal agriculture, veterinary medicine, research, education, and biotechnology.

The animal industry concentration includes courses that prepare you for work in many phases of the livestock industry, such as livestock production on farms and ranches, the meat industry, the feed industry, livestock breed associations and livestock publications.
Regardless of concentration, the Bachelor of Science in Animal Science consists of 120 credits. To earn this degree, you need to complete all University degree requirements, which include General Education requirements, Viewing a Wider World requirements, and elective credits with 48 credits in courses numbered 300 or above.

The science concentration provides you with a strong background in technical science and prepares you for advanced studies leading to graduate or professional degrees.
