The Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences Education equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach and lead in areas that impact everyday life, such as nutrition, human development, personal finance, housing and relationships. This program prepares graduates for New Mexico teaching licensure and addresses the nationwide shortage of Family and Consumer Sciences educators by offering opportunities to teach in junior and senior high schools, community colleges, community agencies and the Extension Service. Through a curriculum that emphasizes critical life skills, students are prepared to make a positive impact on individuals, families and communities.

The Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences Education consists of 120 credits. To earn this degree, you need to complete all Family and Consumer Science core courses, and all University degree requirements, which include General Education requirements, Viewing a Wider World requirements, and elective credits with 48 credits in courses numbered 300 or above.

Requirements for admission to the student teaching component of the Family and Consumer Sciences Education are:

  1. Overall grade-point average of 2.75 or higher, and a grade-point average of 2.75 or higher in family and consumer sciences courses
  2. Evidence of passing NES Essential Academic Tests I, II, III
  3. A C or better in all departmental courses
  4. Recommendation of the advisor
