Second-Language Requirement
A two-year second language requirement ensures that graduates possess practical language skills, enhancing their global competence.
Scholarships Available
Get up to 100% of tuition covered with the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship.**
Students must complete all university degree requirements, which include: General Education requirements, Viewing a Wider World requirements, and elective credits to total at least 120 credits with 48 credits in courses numbered 300/3000 or above. Developmental coursework will not count towards the degree requirements and/or elective credits, but may be needed in order to take the necessary English and mathematics coursework. There is a two-year second language requirement.
The strong interdisciplinary nature of the major in linguistics lends itself to combining with other programs. Students fulfilling the requirements for the major in linguistics are encouraged to complete either a minor or an additional major to enhance their academic pursuits.

The Department of Linguistics provides a supplementary major in Latin American Studies that may be taken in addition to a regular major. The program is designed for students to gain a comprehensive understanding of Latin American societies through courses in language, culture, history, politics and economics.
The Latin American Studies program is designed to allow students to choose between two concentrations.
- Option 1: Concentration in Latin American Language, Culture and Literature (Spanish or Portuguese)
- Option 2: Concentration in a major such as history, government, economics, health science, anthropology, or sociology
The Latin American Studies supplemental major consists of 24 credits, including 18 credits numbered 300 or above. In addition, students must satisfy the College of Arts and Sciences Second Language Requirement.

The Department of Linguistics provides a supplementary major in Chicano Studies that may be taken in addition to a regular major. The program integrates courses from the humanities, social sciences, education, and health and physical sciences, covering topics such as literature, history, psychology, law, and public health.
The Chicano Studies supplemental major consists of 24 credits, including 18 credits numbered 300 or above.
